Natural Resource Partners L.P. (NRP - Free Report) shares have risen 0.4% since reporting third-quarter 2026 results, underperforming the S&P 500 index’s return of 1.7%. Over the past month, NRP units have gained 6.5%, outperforming the benchmark index’s decline of 1.9%.
Natural Resource Partners reported third-quarter 2026 total revenues and other income of $44.8 million, declining 10.2% from $49.9 million in the year-ago quarter. Revenues, excluding equity investment results and asset sales, decreased 4.8% to $48.9 million. Earnings per common unit fell 14.5% to $1.95 from $2.28. Net income fell 14.1% to $26.5 million from $30.9 million due to weaker Mineral Rights earnings and continued losses in the Soda Ash segment.
Natural Resource Partners LP Price, Consensus and EPS Surprise
The operating cash flow increased 7.1% year over year to $44 million from $41.1 million. The free cash flow rose 7.1% to $44.8 million from $41.8 million, reflecting resilient cash generation despite weaker reported earnings.
Adjusted EBITDA declined 3.1% year over year to $37.7 million from $38.9 million. Meanwhile, the free cash flow available for common unitholder and general partner distributions increased to $31.7 million from $10.1 million, primarily reflecting lower debt repayments.
Total coal sales volumes increased 8.5% year over year to 8.2 million tons from 7.5 million tons. However, average coal royalty revenues per ton declined to $4.40 from $4.51, highlighting continued pricing challenges.
Mineral Rights Segment Faces Earnings Pressure
Mineral Rights net income declined $3.9 million year over year to $36.9 million. The decrease primarily reflected higher depletion expenses following revised engineering assessments at a thermal coal property.
Nevertheless, segment operating cash flow increased $1.9 million year over year to $46.3 million. The free cash flow rose approximately $2 million to $47.1 million.
Higher thermal coal sales volumes and improved metallurgical coal pricing and volumes at certain properties supported cash generation. These benefits were partially offset by the timing of minimum payments and lease amendment fees received in the prior-year quarter.
Metallurgical coal represented approximately 70% of coal royalty revenues and 45% of coal royalty sales volumes.
NRP's Soda Ash Business Remains Challenged
The Soda Ash segment reported a net loss of $4.2 million compared with a loss of $2.4 million a year earlier. Lower soda ash selling prices contributed to the deterioration.
Natural Resource Partners received no distributions from Sisecam Wyoming during either comparable quarter. The partnership last received a distribution in the second quarter of 2025.
Management attributed persistent market weakness to expanding Chinese production capacity, insufficient global demand and continued oversupply.
Management Commentary & Market Outlook
President and chief operating officer Craig Nunez emphasized NRP's progress in reducing leverage and strengthening its capacity to distribute cash to unitholders.
Management expects metallurgical coal pricing to remain pressured by weak global steel demand. Thermal coal prices also face headwinds from inexpensive natural gas and elevated power plant inventories.
Natural Resource Partners anticipates no meaningful improvement in coal pricing during 2027.
For soda ash, management expects market rebalancing to take years rather than quarters. Domestic prices could decline further as contracts reset, creating additional challenges in 2027.
Other Developments
NRP fully repaid the remaining $13.1-million balance on its operating company credit facility during the quarter. Outstanding debt totaled $14.3 million at Sept. 30, 2026, with repayment scheduled for December.
Available liquidity reached $251.7 million, including $51.7 million in cash and $200 million in revolving credit capacity.
The partnership declared a third-quarter distribution of $2.34 per common unit compared with the 75 cents distribution paid out for the second quarter. The distribution is payable Nov. 24 to unitholders of record on Nov. 17.
Management indicated that future distributions will depend on quarterly cash generation, liquidity requirements and potential alternative capital allocations.
